Spain top country for second homes

16.07.2007

Spain is the most popular country for people to buy a second home in, but many would-be investors are put off because there are already too many Britons there, a survey revealed.
Around 82% of people said they would not buy a home in Spain because of the country's large British community, according to specialist lender GE Money Home Lending.
France is the second most popular place in which to buy a property abroad, but more than half of those questioned said they would not invest in the country because they did not like French people, while 42% felt the same way about Germany because of their dislike of Germans.
Florida is the third most popular place to buy a holiday pad, although more than half of those questioned said they thought it was too far away, while Italy and Portugal are also popular.
When selecting a country in which to buy a property in, people said they were attracted by climate, culture, food, affordability and cheap travel.
But one in five people said they would not buy a home in a country where they thought the language would be too difficult to learn, with investors also put off by locations they considered to be dangerous and places that were too far away.
ICM Research questioned 1,002 people online during May.
