Govt OKs euro adoption plan, no date specified for now

18.04.2007

Prague- The Czech government today adopted a national plan of euro adoption which sets no date for now and comprises individual steps needed for a smooth and successful introduction of the single currency in the Czech Republic, Premier Mirek Topolanek told journalists.
The government will announce the euro adoption date after approval of the public finance reform, he said after the cabinet meeting.
"Without reforms the discussion will be unnecessary," said Topolanek.
The Finance Ministry considers it feasible to adopt the euro in 2012. First, however, the public finance deficit has to be reduced, and the cabinet therefore prepared a package of reforms to strengthen public finance.
The lower house will start discussing the package in June.
The first draft of the plan lays emphasis on steps that have to be taken before the euro adoption date is set officially.
The government approved in October a big bang scenario for euro adoption which was recommended to it by the national coordination group for adopting the single currency.
The government had also said the state of public finance makes it impossible for the country to enter the exchange rate mechanism ERM II in 2007.
